Neighborhood

The Ross Valley, a tale of two cities

The Towns of San Anselmo & Fairfax are environmentally conscious communities situated in the heart of central Marin Counties “Ross Valley” and are considered the most progressive of Marin’s 11 incorporated cities.

San Anselmo:

San Anselmo is located in Central Marin County, about 15 miles north of San Francisco. Neighboring towns include San Rafael to the east, Fairfax to the west, Ross to the south, and San Rafael to the north. The population is about 12,000. The Award winning Ross Valley School District has four elementary schools and one middle school. Sir Francis Drake High School, which is in the Tamalpais Union High School District, serves San Anselmo.

Great weather, access to hiking and biking trails, good schools, and a strong, vibrant downtown make San Anselmo a convenient and desirable destination for Marin County homebuyers looking to live a little off the beaten track.

The neighborhood surrounding the San Francisco Theological Seminary is a quiet, leafy enclave of large, older houses with well-tended yards. Heading up Butterfield Road will take you to the rolling hills above San Anselmo and sweeping views of the open spaces, grasslands, and oak trees of northern Marin County. Downtown, locals get their fill of delicious food at MH Bread and Butter or Cucina and shop for clothing, gifts and accessories in many of the downtown boutiques.

San Anselmo is a neighborly town made for strolling, relaxing in Imagination Park, browsing one-of-a-kind shops or sampling culinary delights in the many restaurants lining the main street.

Fairfax:

Fairfax offers the best balance of work and play, while retaining its small town atmosphere, charm, and identity.  The seasonal (June-September) Farmer’s Market is held each Wednesday evening in the Fairfax Park and is a gathering place for the entire community. Locally owned independent businesses, restaurants, cafes, and nightclubs offer shopping and nightlife options comparable to no other town, regardless of size. Couple that with award winning schools! It’s no surprise that San Francisco Magazine chose Fairfax among the Top 10 of the Bay Area’s 107 towns.

The countless miles of protected open space surrounding the town not only provide a beautiful backdrop for the town, but also provide the ultimate outdoorsman’s playground.  There are simply more trails and open space than time in the day.  Visitors of all ages come to Fairfax throughout the year to enjoy the wonderful climate and to explore the region on foot, horse and bicycle. Many world-renowned musicians call Fairfax home, and with 30 plus years of consecutive live music every night, Fairfax’s multiple venues offer a unique setting for local and national touring musicians to jam in a relaxed at home environment.  And with over 20 restaurants and cafés, independent book stores, clothing, and gifts, there really is Fairfax variety, offering something for everybody.
